MELANIE COMBER:
NO MAN'S LAND
13.04.11 to 13.05.11
Fine Art Society, London
148 New Bond Street, London W1S
2JT
Is it a photograph? A lunar landscape?
A microscopic view of silk? The initial
ambiguity in the works of Melanie Comber
demands a complex navigation of the
surface from the viewer: we become exploratory
moonwalkers, activated and challenged.
Toying with traditional painting techniques
of scale and perspective, the works
are at once familiar, legible and yet
alien. The perspective lines in Lake
Search for Missing Swimmer: Part 4
lead us through the painting, but without
a horizon line to mediate the space,
Comber offers us no reference point,
no refuge just a haunting expanse.
However, the depth of the work is more
than simply illusionistic: the oil paint
and pigment are doused, scraped, scratched,
dusted over the canvas, creating sculptural
forms that demand to be seen from multiple
viewpoints.

DIVERGENCE
Alice Browne / Jane Bustin / Dragica
Carlin / Sarah McNulty / Nadia Mulder
/ Susan Sluglett / Claire Undy / Clare
Wilson
02.09.10 - 03.10.10
An exhibition of abstract painting
Forman's Smokehouse Gallery in Hackney
Wick, E3 2NT.
Divergence is an exhibition of eight
abstract painters whose work contains
no theme or direct subject matter, nor
exist as abstractions of
something real. Rather, they are explorations
of their very nature as an abstract
painting: an enquiry uniting all artists
in the show. At the point of drawing
conclusions their practises diverge,
culminating in a widely varied selection
of work, ranging from the coolly minimal
to the energetically gestural. An enduring
sense of the real and the human perpetuates
throughout these eight diverse practises,
creating an engaging visual experience
for the viewer.
Exhibiting artists include former APF
staff and current APF customers, highly
recommended!
Open Thursdays and Fridays 5-9pm, Saturdays
and Sundays 12-5pm.
Private view Thursday 2nd September
6-9pm.

website at: http://www.divergenceexhibition.com/

Michael Craig-Martin:
KIDS
Children's Hospital Atrium, John Radcliffe
Hospital, Oxford
Michael Craig-Martin's major new wall painting
for the atrium of the Children's Hospital
and West Wing at the John Radcliffe Hospital
is now complete. The wall painting, which
extends over five storeys, will be one of
the largest artworks Michael has executed
in this country and has been paid for entirely
through charitable donations made specifically
for this purpose.
This giant painting, which was completed using
Lascaux paint at the end of April 2010, is
sited in the busy entrance to the West Wing
and Children's Hospital and will be seen by
tens of thousands of patients, visitors and
staff each year. Due to the fact that the
children's cancer ward looks on to the atrium,
it will also transform the lives of children
who often spend weeks restricted to isolation
rooms while receiving treatment.

Jason Brooks, Jake and Dinos Chapman,

Straw Dogs
Spring Projects
24.06.10 - 30.07.10
STRAW DOGS is a group exhibition which presents
second hand objects in a new light. On entering
the gallery, a collection of cast-off paintings,
furniture and objects are displayed which
have been mutated, mediated and embellished.
Just as media images are adapted through
retouching STRAW DOGS reminds us to look beneath
the surface. The exhibition forces us to examine
our present day fascination with improving
the look of our own image, surroundings and,
ultimately, legacy.
Gallery Opening Hours: Tue-Wed 10am - 5pm,
Thu-Fri 12-7pm, Sat 11-4pm
Nearest Stations: Kentish Town & Kentish
Town West
Admission: Free

Ben Deakin:
Nothing to be Done
Tannery Arts
01.07.10-03.07.10
Private View: 30th June 2010, 6-8pm
"Nothing to be done" mutters Estragon,
in the opening line to Samuel Beckett's "Waiting
for Godot". Despite sounding like a statement
of despair, Beckett's characters have been
said to explore the notion of "nothing"
as a thing to be done. The phrase is repeated
as the lives of Vladimir and Estragon unfold,
and we become increasingly aware that "nothing"
is a state of existence contrived by the repetition
of mundane and obsessive actions by the pair.
Like Beckett's characters, the artist strives
to create order out of habits, processes and
practice. Most commonly associated with painting,
this desire to elicit meaning from the mundane
similarly comes with no guarantee of success.
In spite of this the artist continues, to
paraphrase Beckett, to resume the struggle
and "Nothing to be done" becomes
a call to arms.
.
Gallery Opening Hours: 12-6pm
Admission: Free
Directions as for The Drawing Room:
Old St underground and then bus routes 55
up Hackney Road ( bus stop after the Bingo

Private View: 11th November 2009 6:30-8:30PM
Hannah Maybank is well known for pushing
the boundaries of painting as a two-dimensional
discipline through her transformation of the
flat painterly surface into one that ripples,
splinters, overlaps, and protrudes. In this
new body of work she combines the three-dimensionality
of her sculptural surfaces with the conventions
of historical landscape painting and illusory
perspective.
