SHIHO TAKIZAWA:
WINNER OF THE AP FITZPATRICK EAST LONDON
PRINTMAKERS PRIZE 2010
AP Fitzpatrick awarded their printmaking
prize to Shiho Takizawa from East London
Printmakers (ELP)'s annual exhibition
this year.
After much consideration of all the
good work in the show, Hannah, Alice,
Andrea and Rose were pleased to award
the prize to Shiho Takizawa. The winning
work, Blue Bubble Set used a
variety of media including screenprinting,
etching, and found objects in innovative
ways, housed inside a glass doored wooden
cabinet. Shiho explained that the elements
of the cabinet can also be rearranged
by the viewer.

Michael Craig-Martin:
KIDS
Children's Hospital Atrium, John Radcliffe
Hospital, Oxford
Michael Craig-Martin's major new wall painting
for the atrium of the Children's Hospital
and West Wing at the John Radcliffe Hospital
is now complete. The wall painting, which
extends over five storeys, will be one of
the largest artworks Michael has executed
in this country and has been paid for entirely
through charitable donations made specifically
for this purpose.
This giant painting, which was completed using
Lascaux paint at the end of April 2010, is
sited in the busy entrance to the West Wing
and Children's Hospital and will be seen by
tens of thousands of patients, visitors and
staff each year. Due to the fact that the
children's cancer ward looks on to the atrium,
it will also transform the lives of children
who often spend weeks restricted to isolation
rooms while receiving treatment.

STRAW DOGS is a group exhibition which presents
second hand objects in a new light. On entering
the gallery, a collection of cast-off paintings,
furniture and objects are displayed which
have been mutated, mediated and embellished.
Just as media images are adapted through
retouching STRAW DOGS reminds us to look beneath
the surface. The exhibition forces us to examine
our present day fascination with improving
the look of our own image, surroundings and,
ultimately, legacy.

Nothing to be Done
Tannery Arts

Private View: 30th June 2010, 6-8pm
"Nothing to be done" mutters Estragon,
in the opening line to Samuel Beckett's "Waiting
for Godot". Despite sounding like a statement
of despair, Beckett's characters have been
said to explore the notion of "nothing"
as a thing to be done. The phrase is repeated
as the lives of Vladimir and Estragon unfold,
and we become increasingly aware that "nothing"
is a state of existence contrived by the repetition
of mundane and obsessive actions by the pair.
Like Beckett's characters, the artist strives
to create order out of habits, processes and
practice. Most commonly associated with painting,
this desire to elicit meaning from the mundane
similarly comes with no guarantee of success.
In spite of this the artist continues, to
paraphrase Beckett, to resume the struggle
and "Nothing to be done" becomes
a call to arms.

We have the Plans provides an extensive picture
of contemporary art practice in Wales and
expresses a broad range of current concerns.

This year graduating students have been inspired
by many art and craft traditions, including:
geometric design, architectural crafts, ceramics,
iconography, manuscript illumination and miniature
painting.
The exhibition will be open from 6 to 16

Hannah Maybank is well known for pushing
the boundaries of painting as a two-dimensional
discipline through her transformation of the
flat painterly surface into one that ripples,
splinters, overlaps, and protrudes. In this
new body of work she combines the three-dimensionality
of her sculptural surfaces with the conventions
of historical landscape painting and illusory
perspective.
